Borneo Orang Utan Tanjung Puting Natioanal Park
Tanjung Puting National Park is a remarkable ecological gem located in the southwestern part of Borneo, within the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. Spanning over 416,000 hectares, it boasts a diverse range of ecosystems, including dryland dipterocarp forests, swamps, heath forests, mangroves, and coastal forests. Access to the park is primarily through the scenic Kumai River, where you can explore using boats, canoes, or traditional klotok boats. The park is home to a rich biodiversity, including gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, Malayan bears, porcupines, bearded pigs, mouse deer, reptiles like crocodiles, monitor lizards, pythons, and a variety of birds, such as hornbills and kingfishers. The diverse ecosystem also encompasses insects like the giant Bornean butterfly, contributing to the park’s natural wonders. Visitors can also learn about the pioneering work of Dr. Biruté Galdikas, a leading expert in orangutan behavior, who established Camp Leakey within the park. Her dedication to studying orangutans and their rehabilitation has left a lasting legacy, drawing international attention and gracing the cover of National Geographic in 1975. The park also collaborates with the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI), founded in 1986, which plays a vital role in orangutan protection, conservation, and research. Exploring Tanjung Puting National Park offers a unique opportunity to witness the incredible biodiversity of Borneo, including orangutans, while immersing yourself in the pristine wilderness of this remarkable conservation area.
