Itinerary:
DAY 01: ARRIVAL PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – TANJUNG HARAPAN (L,D)
Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport by plane…
You will be warmly welcomed by our representative and guide then direct transfer to Kumai. Upon your arrival in Kumai direct transfer to the houseboat, where we board the Klotok boat and meet the boat crew that will be part of our adventure. Lunch will be provided on board. Afterward boating down Kumai River approximately 15 minutes to reach Seikonyer River, the main river in Tanjung Puting National Park. Cruise up the Seikonyer river and you will see nice vegetation around the riverbank, Nipa Palm, Pandanus, and some kind of trees that grow around the river. See some wildlife such as birds, Macaque, Proboscis Monkey and Orangutan, it takes about an hour to get from the harbor in Kumai to the entrance of Tanjung Puting National Park. The first stop is at Tanjung Harapan where the orangutan feeding takes place at 15:00am. We continue the cruise as the jungle is at its noisiest. We hear Proboscis monkeys, Macaques, Silver Langurs, and colorful birds. Finally, it is time for a candlelight dinner, and an exciting night in the jungle. 3 overnight on a houseboat.
Notes: The Klotok is a traditional wooden houseboat, of which the size depends on the group size. Local Guides only make use of boats with a Western toilet (not a squat toilet) and a Western shower (not a mandi). There is a bottom deck for the crew and a middle deck exclusively for the guests. The boats are open on the sides for the view, but they will be closed at night or during rain. All meals, snacks and drinks will be served in the boat by our personal cook. At night, the mattresses and mosquito nets are prepared.
DAY 02: CAMP LEAKEY – NIPA AREA – NIGHT WALK (B,L,D)
After breakfast, the boat cruise continues as we enjoy the sunrise and go through the habitat of the proboscis monkey and the estuarine crocodile. At some point we’ll make a turn in a junction of the river where the watercolor changes from bright orange to dark black. The river narrows and the reflection of the dense jungle in the water gives a surreal feeling. We arrived at Camp Leakey, a research- and rehabilitation center for orangutans. If you are lucky, you will meet here the “King of Camp Leaky”: a male orangutan named Big Tom. Here, we take an exciting, short jungle trek. We return at 2 pm to witness the orangutan feeding. Then, we cruised down to Pondok Ambung. We get a candlelight dinner, and then take a brave night walk in the jungle in search of glowing mushrooms, tarantulas, deers, and tarsier (unique to the region).
DAY 03: PONDOK TANGGUI – CAMP PESALAT – VILLAGE (B,L,D)
After breakfast we cruise down towards Pondok Tanggui; a ranger camp home to pre-wild and adolescent orangutans, as well as deer, boar and many bird species. We’ll visit the orangutan feeding at 9h am. Back at the boat, we get lunch, and we proceed to the reforestation site of Camp Pesalat, where you learn about the importance of their conservation initiatives, and can donate through planting your own tree. Then, we visit the Sekonyer village, meet locals and view handmade souvenirs. In case there is any time left, we visit for the second time the feeding at Tanjung Harapang. We cruise down to the Nipa area, where we may see fireflies depending on the weather. Here, we’ll have a candle light dinner, and spend the rest of the night.
