Itinerary:
DAY 01: ARRIVAL MAKASSAR – TANA TORAJA / RANTEPAO
After arrival at Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar with flight schedule…
You will be warmly welcomed by our guide then we drive directly to Tana Toraja with astonishing landscape along the way for 8-9 hours drive. You will pass through the Bugis tribe village where you can see traditional houses with their houses on poles along the magnificent mountainous ranges. In the afternoon you can have your lunch at Bukit Indah in Pare Pare. Refreshment on the hilltop of Puncak Lakawan and enjoy the scenic mountain landscape. Late afternoon arrive in Tana Toraja / Rantepao. Check-in hotel. 3 overnight stays in Rantepao.
Note: We recommend you to arrive early morning in Makassar airport as Day 1 is long trip to Tana Toraja. Other alternative is you can take a domestic flight from Makassar to Palopo (nearest city from Tana Toraja), it is only an hour flight and needs only 2 hours drive from Palopo to Tana Toraja.
DAY 02: TANA TORAJA CULTURAL DAY TOUR
Breakfast at the hotel. On this day we start visiting the Toraja’s rich heritage sites. First, we’ll visit the cliffside stone graves at Lemo to see rows Tau Tau installed statues on a high cliff balcony overlooking the green valley of Toraja. Then we continue to the royal family tombs in Suaya, we make some walks to a giant tree made as burial site for a newborn baby who died before teething in Kambira. After lunch, we drove to a traditional carving village in Ketu Kesu, natural burial cave ast Londa, the typical village at Nanggala with 16 rice barns standing in a row as a sign of their wealthy status in Toraja community. Then continue to the ancient house grave at Marante village. Late afternoon back to the hotel.
Day 3: Tana Toraja Cultural Tour
Breakfast at hotel. This day as second day in Tana Toraja you will have full day tour again to other great places such as Palawa the traditional Toraja village with full of buffalo horns in their houses, traditional weaving village in Sa’dan and the ancient megalithic stone at Bori. Then drive to Batu Tumonga best known for its spectacular views of rice terraces. Hereafter you can also make a soft trekking from Lokomata to Pana and you will be picked up at the other side of village Tikala. This time you can walk along the countryside to see the daily life of Toraja people. Late afternoon back to hotel.
DAY 04: TANA TORAJA – SENGKANG
Breakfast at the hotel. Leaving Tana Toraja for Sengkang via Palopo. Sengkang as knows a Bugis tribe territory (enclave of the old feudal kingdom, nowadays best known for its handmade silk fabrics). In Sengkang we will visit Tempe Lake with a canoe where the fishing community of the Bugis is located. It is impressive to see their houses built in the middle of the lake that they only leave when they go to work or trade. We will have the opportunity to visit them and enjoy their hospitality by taking you together with them. A very enriching experience where we can live with this ethnic group with so many years of unique existence in the world. After spending this day that will undoubtedly impress you, we will go to the hotel, and you’ll have time for yourself. Overnight stay in Sengkang.
DAY 05: SENGKANG – MAKASSAR – AIRPORT
Breakfast at hotel. Then we depart south towards the capital of Sulawesi. This will take approximately 5 hours. Arrive in Makassar and directly transfer you to the airport of Sultan Hasanuddin in Makassar for your onward flight. End of services.
